Government ministers held discussions with port and dock workers in Berbera over fears of being laid off once Dubai Ports World assumes the contractual management. Somaliland government dispatched ministers to diffuse the tension which was running high in the seaport.
Ministers held meetings with port workers to try and resolve the standoff and have reassured that DPW will incorporate. There are employees who will face the prospects of losing their jobs prior to the takeover.
The ministers have allayed the fears that they will do all they can to create jobs once DPW takes over officially. There are 1200 to 1600 port and dock workers working in Berbera port.
In a bid to appease angry port workers, whose action has caused problems at the ports of Berbera, the government is seeking to create employment disaffected staff.
Somaliland authority and DPW entered into an agreement which will see the overhaul of Berbera port as one of the busiest ports in the region.
